Americans Agree: There's Nothing Quite Like ChocolateChocolate Reigns as America's Favorite Flavor Consumers chose chocolate as their favorite flavor in desserts and sweet snacks in a survey conducted by the Chocolate Manufacturers Association, leaving all other flavors far down on the dessert menu. Fifty percent of adults named chocolate as their number one flavor. Strawberry/other berry flavors came in second with 13 percent of the consumer tally and vanilla followed with 10 percent saying it was their favorite. After that, no other flavor earned more than 2 percent of consumers' preference. "American consumers love their chocolate," says Lynn Bragg, president of the Chocolate Manufacturers Association. "We've conducted this poll periodically over the past 15 years, and every time chocolate comes out on top by a significant margin." The poll also revealed that women prefer chocolate more than men: a total of 56 percent of women said chocolate is their favorite flavor compared to 42 percent of men. Why is chocolate so popular? Renowned pastry chef and cookbook author Nick Malgieri offers his opinion. "Chocolate is a unique food - throughout its history it has held a special place in our hearts. It is a food of celebration, a welcome gift a highly pleasurable treat - it captures our emotions and our appetites in so many different ways." From a decadent chocolate torte to a plate of warm chocolate chip cookies, from a chocolate ice cream cone to a simple chocolate bar, American consumers seem to agree that there is nothing quite like chocolate. |
